Why should I name SGLI beneficiaries instead of leaving it blank?

Money— Changes what you are paid, what you keep, or what you owe.

A blank SGLI election does not go to whoever needs it most. It pays "by law" — a fixed statutory order of precedence that pays your spouse, then children, then parents, regardless of your circumstances or your intentions.

If you skip it

By-law payment cannot be argued with after the fact. It has paid an estranged spouse, bypassed a partner of many years, and sent money to a minor child in a lump sum with no one appointed to manage it — each entirely correctly, and each not what the member wanted.

“By law” is not “to my family”

Leaving the beneficiary field blank feels neutral, as though the money will find the right people. It is not neutral. It selects a specific, rigid rule.

The order of precedence pays in a fixed sequence and does not consider anything about your actual life — not a separation that never became a divorce, not a partner you are not married to, not which of your children is the one who has been caring for you, not a sibling who depends on you.

The failure people do not see coming

The expensive version of this is not “the wrong person got the money”. It is “the right person got the money at the wrong time, in the wrong form”.

A lump sum paid to a minor child generally cannot be handed to the child. It needs someone with legal authority to receive and manage it — and if you did not arrange that, a court appoints someone, on a timescale that has nothing to do with when the family needs funds.

This is a designation, not a will

Your will does not control SGLI. Neither does a divorce decree, a separation agreement, or what everybody in the family understood you wanted. The designation on file governs, and it governs completely.

That is why this belongs on a list of things to check rather than a thing to do once.

When to revisit it

Every time your family changes: marriage, divorce, a birth, a death, a separation. Also on every deployment and every PCS, because those are the moments when the form is in front of you anyway and when the consequence of a stale designation is most real.

Check the amount at the same time. Coverage is elected, not automatic at the maximum, and a reduced election made once tends to stay reduced for a career.

What to actually do

The steps this answers for. An explanation that does not return you to an action is just an essay.
