Why should I read my DD-214 carefully before I sign it?
Records— Affects a document you will be asked to produce years from now.
The DD-214 is the document every later benefit is checked against — VA claims, retired pay, home loan eligibility, federal hiring preference, burial honours. An error on it is an error on all of them at once.
If you skip it
Correcting a DD-214 after the fact means a formal records-correction process that can take many months, while every benefit that reads from it is held up or wrong in the meantime.
One document, many dependencies
Most records in a military career are read by one office for one purpose. The DD-214 is not. It is the summary document that outside institutions — the VA, lenders, federal HR, state veterans’ agencies, funeral homes — rely on because it is the one thing they can all ask for.
That concentration is what makes an error expensive. A wrong character of service, a missing campaign award, a misstated separation code or an incorrect date does not cause one problem. It causes the same problem repeatedly, in every context that reads the form, for decades.
Why it is easy to sign without reading
It arrives at the end of an out-processing sequence, in a stack, on a day with a great deal else happening, and it looks administrative. Everything on it is a restatement of something you already know, which makes skimming feel safe.
The fields most often wrong are the ones you are least likely to check: awards and decorations, foreign service, and the codes at the bottom that mean nothing to you and a great deal to a benefits examiner.
Read it against evidence, not memory
Check it line by line against your records rather than against your recollection — your award citations, your orders, your deployment documentation. Memory is reliable about what happened and unreliable about dates and official titles, which is precisely what the form records.
If it is already wrong
There is a formal correction process, and it works, but it operates on its own timescale. Start it as soon as you find the error rather than when the error first blocks something, because by then you are waiting on the correction and on whatever it was holding up.
Keep certified copies somewhere you will still have them in thirty years, and give one to someone who would need it if you could not produce it yourself.
What to actually do
The steps this answers for. An explanation that does not return you to an action is just an essay.
